As a life insurance agent, I hear a lot of stories about death.  Some of the decedents have life insurance and some don’t.  The gift of life really is amazing, and we truly never know what freak accident could victimize us tomorrow and leave our loved ones to make due without our presence.  So the first thing that I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving is that I’ve not fallen victim to a “what are the odds?” disaster, nor has anyone else in my immediate family.

I shouldn’t be working today, so let me finish with a few thoughts about why Thanksgiving is the perfect time to buy life insurance.  First of all, if tonight you ate a tub of mashed potatoes swimming in gravy, a half a pig, and washed it down with a Coors, you’re practically begging for a heart attack.  Can I interest you in some life insurance… perhaps term life insurance, to protect your family?

I am 25, my wife is 25 and my son is 4 yrs old. I think its about time i got life insurance. Im slightly confused because most of the websites i have visited offer insuance for term cover? I dont have a mortgage or anything. Most of the insurance companies offer term cover up until 40 years which would only make me 65 and if i dont pop it then i lose all the money i have paid over the years. I want insurance whereby if anything ever happens god forbid to myself or partner at any age then i want to be sure that i will have the financial protection for my family. I would like a high amount to be paid to the other partner should any of us pass away.

Boston Consulting is currently completing a survey of 12,000 women in 22 countries about their families’ finances. What they’ve determined so far is interesting.

More than 80% of women do not think they are saving enough for retirement, and nearly half say they’re dissatisfied with investment providers, banking services and insurance providers. The survey states that women now own or co-own 40% of the businesses in the United States, and this number is growing at twice the rate of businesses in general. It also found that 77% of respondents manage their households, including most finances, and are under stress because of it.

We talk to people all the time who say that they are insurance poor and that they have too much insurance.  I completely understand being insurance poor as there are so many critical types of insurance that you should buy for yourself.  My list of insurances grows all the time and now I have life, health, disability, homeowners, flood, car, dental, and vision.   After buying all of those, I feel like I have protected just about every basis possible.

All of these are critically important and some are even required by law to carry.     My goal is too have maximum protection for all of the key areas of risk.  When I say maximum protection, I mean full replacement value of what you are insuring.   For example, if my car is worth $40,000 and I total it, I want full replacement of $40,000 from my insurance company.   If I become disabled and can’t work, I want to make sure I can replace my income as close to its current level as possible.   Not to belabor the point, but if my house burns down, I want full value from the insurance company.

I try to calculate life insurance in the same fashion.  What is my full value to my family?  I want the insurance company to reimburse the full 40k for the car and the full amount to my family.   I doubt my family is going to get a check after I pass away and say, “gee, this is too much”.   I am not suggesting to overinsure, but rather to be consistent and try and protect full value on important assets like yourself.

I paid the premium after passing all the medical exams, etc… They never told me I was covered from when I applied for the policy, four months earlyer. Now they tell me I was covered from the date of application. I doubt they would have paid out before getting my payment. Am I being scammed?

We just had a Primerica representative come in our house and try to tell us why we need life insurance.

I do agree and I would like a term life insurance plan, but am not sure if I want to go with Primerica. They are not the cheapest and I read some good and bad things about them.

Can anyone recommend some alternative companies?

How is Transamerica? They seem to pop up in the top 10 insurance company list a lot.

I came on board about a month ago as the LIFE Foundation’s communications director.
